Sorry to have missed yesterday - the Ravensdeath household has been plagued by an unrelenting stomach bug and all service was disrupted. It'll get quiet again here tomorrow for Thanksgiving.

The Vault of Horror polled the crème de la crème of horror bloggers to come up with a list of the Top 50 Horror Films in response to HMV's earlier, and much discussed. survey on the same topic.

The "Cyber-Horror Elite" Have Spoken: Presenting the Top 50 Horror FIlms of All Time!

I have far fewer disagreements with this list than HMV's - though some of the selections still baffle me:

44. The Mist (2007) dir: Frank Darabont
46. The Living Dead Girl (1982) dir: Jean Rollin

Thriller? Really? And am I the only one who thought The Mist was seriously mediocre?

And while I would re-rank many of the titles up or down the mere fact that I basically agree with 44 of 50 choices is something of a miracle.

HMV's Top 50 Horror Films - IMHO

Since the HMV Top 50 Horror Films poll has been getting a lot of play recently I thought I'd take a stab at it as well. I've seen all but two of the films listed and, back in my days as a DVD reviewer, I've written about a fair number of them.

First off I'll pull films that are undeniably important within the genre due to their subsequent influence or vast polularity but simply aren't Top 50 material, for me personally. Many of these films might make a Top 100 or 200 list but a few do absolutly nothing for me. I've tried to get into Lost Boys half a dozen times but can't. Blair Witch and Saw had killer concepts but were poorly executed - though my disappointment with them might have been due to my own higher than realistic expectations. The Shining (plus It and Salem's Lot) may have faced an unfair disadvantage thanks to my affection for the source mterial (but The Mist would have disappointed me even if I hadn't loved King's novella).

Model Alison Parker (Cristina Raines) gets a great deal on a Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment -- but there's just one catch: It's also the gateway to Hell, and she's on the invite list. Universal's answer to The Exorcist features special makeup effects by Dick Smith and a stellar supporting cast: Chris Sarandon, Burgess Meredith, Jose Ferrer, Sylvia Miles, John Carradine, Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Ava Gardner and Tom Berenger.

Naked Fear
When Diana (Danielle De Luca) takes a job as a stripper in a sleepy New Mexico town, she's unaware that her fellow dancers have been disappearing. The local sheriff (Joe Mantegna) is stumped, but Diana learns the truth when she becomes the next victim. Her abductor takes her into the desert, where he strips her and lets her go. Then, he begins to hunt Diana with a rifle through the wilderness as she flees, naked and terrified.

Shocker
Frightmeister Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) creates a new boogieman in Horace Pinker (Mitch Pileggi). All the electric chair does to Horace is turn him into a high-voltage phantom that haunts Jonathan (future director Peter Berg), the boyfriend of the girl he gruesomely murdered (there's also a psychic link between the two). Michael Murphy and Heather Langenkamp (of the original Nightmare on Elm Street) co-star.
